Who or what is killing the bee's now...

Besides nasty pathogens...United Parcel Services is killing them in transit. Delays, routing errors, delivery on the stoop (in full sun), with no one home. Apiarian (friends) are having a real problem, plea's to stop fall on deaf ears. Eight very scarce imported queen bees were found dead on his stoop this Summer, adding to the toll of 33 from previous deliveries. Bees fill our food baskets! :munching_

Parasites and viruses are not the only problems where bee decline is concerned. Extensive and indiscriminate use of 'bug sprays' add to the problem and this year the late spring cold snap and very wet summer killed most of the bees in my area. All flowers and crops were affected and yields were very low or non-extistent.

A lot of people regard bees as a nuisance and don't seem to realise that without them we'll starve. That, coupled with global warming, does'nt augur well for the future.

        Will we ever learn?

          Took the course...pesticides 1101

The pesticide course through OKie State Extension Services was quite informative. Insecticides and herbicides (2 - 4D) are giving the wine and mead industry fits here...over use and improper application are the main concerns.

I concur with the pesticide and herbicide issue. I believe that this years bee mortality has been due to some kind of a virus? I have not followed up to see if they have found a remedy or if we can expect worse next season? will have to do that follow up work? Cheers DAW

              Eagle eye..

When in the woods I always keep an eagle eye for bee hives...then call Daryl, an apiarian friend, who extracts the queen to a new hive of his keeping. People call him to remove bee hives from outbuildings or in their backyards. His hives are in much demand all over the USA. Hilltop Honey Farm, Muldrow, OKieHoma. He has some fine honey, all sorts, and blends, too many to list here.
