  • Bottler review

Xmas arrived today in the form of a large cardboard box from Belguim. Oh yes my Brewland order had arrived.

One of the most pleasant surprises was the automatic bottler. A plastic lump that sits on the end of your syphon hose and stops when the bottles full.
These have been a subject of many posts so I thought a review might be in order.

This was my mystery item. My 'I'll punt a tenner on that' so expectations were low. So imagine my surprise when it worked, and it worked well.

    Setup
Your syphon connects to the sprigot on the side. Poke it in a bottle. Suck overflow tube. Voila. Adjust sensitivity (red ring) a little. Ran it four or five times with water into a beer bottle. 100%. You adjust the depth of the fill by sliding it up and down through it's cork.

    Pro's.
Sterilises well because it is all plastic.
    Cheap.
Overflow tube is long enough to reach another bottle.
Wine is trickled down the side of the bottle thus minimising oxidation.

    Cons
The syphon hose spiget is garden hose size, not SBS (standard brtish syphon) so a bit of reduction is required.
    The instructions are very basic.

    Conclusion
So if I stand on it, will I replace it? I think the answer will be yes. I have not used it in anger yet. The plan is for it to fill the bottles while I cork them. Or put another way I should be able to bottle as fast as I can cork.

That sounds like a useful bit of kit and a nice review. For the sake of a tenner I might have to try one.

        Quick update:

Rubbish for beer - it spits a lot of foam out of the overflow.

Still wine - AOK. Two observations. Works best with a garden hose size syphon, I think it is the balance of the unit's internals with 'weight' of the flow.

Skinny syphon is OK, but the unit is more sensitive and quite a bit slower.

Needs a good seal in the bottle, fit it like a stopper. Not just popped in the neck of the bottle.
