  • Basic equipment needed for winemaking

2 gallon food grade bucket with lid
1 Gallon Demijohn (glass or plastic)
    1 bung with drilled hole
    1 airlock to fit bung
    Plastic spoon
    syphon tube
racking tube to avoid stirring up sediment (optional)
    bottle brush
    6 bottles
    6 corks or stoppers
Hydrometer (not absolutely necessary at this point, but your hydrometer will soon become your best friend, so good to get used to using it from the start)
    hydrometer jar
Thermometer (again, not absolutely necessary at this point)
    5ml measuring spoon or syringe
    Sodium Metabisulphite
    Campden Tablets (optional)
    Citric Acid
    Yeast Nutrient
Yeast (don't buy general purpose or bread yeast Lalvin or Gervin yeasts would be fine)

What I intend doing is leading you through the steps to making wine, starting with the basic equipment needed for wine number 1, an easy to make wine that will be drinkable in a month, so that we learn the basics of the Winemaking process. More equipment will be added as we progress to different wines, and extra processes will be covered along the way, it means you can get an introduction to the hobby, for a reasonable outlay, and see if you like it, there will be pictures along the way so you can see how it works too.
It would be a good time to get a friend involved in the hobby too, winemaking is a great way to share time with friends, in fact why dont you put together the equipment bundle listed above and give it as a gift! and the recipient can follow this thread.

If you have any suggestions or questions regarding any part of the process then please post them in the general Winemaking area, or PM me, as I don't want this thread to become cluttered, it needs to be easy to read.

In fact I will leave it locked, the same as the tutorials, makes it easier to find the info

    cheers
    Bob
