  • My First All Grain Attempt

My first recipe is going to be a guinness clone

wish me luck and i'll see if i can get some pictures of how I get on

Picked up a few bits of kit along the way - mostly mail order from Hop and Grape (early christmas present)

Don't know what its going to turn out like though as it's a first attempt - been reading and there are a few excellent films on youtube re sparging and mashing

i'll let you know how it turns out

        Here we go then

        this is the grain:
        pale malt 3kg
        flaked barley 500g
        roast barley 500g

cracked the roast barley in bucket using a meat tenderiser (did the job - so what the hell)

I then heated the water in my brew bin to 168 F strike heat

give it a good old mix to ensure no dry spots and turned the heater down to maintain a mash temperature of around 150 F

this is a shot of a piece of kit I improvised

I bought a cheap shower head from wickes and attched it to some thick tubing controlled by a tap

this I used for the sparging process you will see next

next step was to heat 3 gallon of water to 170 f and place in a bucket or keg with tap and elevate in order to sparge the grain into a subsequent bucket (without getting wet!!! i didn't manage that one! as you can see)

so as you can see you have hot water up on top which is sprayed over the grain to wash all the extracted malt in to the brew bucket. The first gallon that comes off is re-introduced to the grain as it needs to be clear extract only that is to be fermented

It should then run off like so. And don't laugh at the slippers

thanks to Mrs kerosine for helping with the photos

After this stage transfer back in to the boiler and bring the lot to the boil and introduce the hops - in this instance 28g of Brewers Gold and 42g of Northern Brewer

                      add hops.jpg

Boil for an hour and half then stain into brew bin and allow to cool. Idealy this should be a forced cool but I had to go out, therefore I stuck it in the garage!

after cooling I made up a starter with 1stp yeast and the wort warmed up to room temp

checked SG came in around 1040
