An absolute great turnout of the wine circle today, which was wonderful in comparison to the last one! In all, we had 12 members attending. The conversation was stimulating, exciting and informative. We thank each and every member for attending and participating as they did. It’s great that it was such a success, and we hope this spurs some interest in participating in Pontefract Open Show’s Virtual Wine Circle Competition. We certainly had a lively discussion on what will be! Thanks again to all attendees! Don’t forget to get a friend involved in the hobby!

Bob Morton (lockwood1956) and Richard Sharp (Richard_S) did the question and answer session. We talked about label jigs, airspace, how to get rid of calcium deposits from the inside of bottles, bottle shock and the up-and-coming “standard” for the Virtual Wine Circle PET bottles. It was also talked about how important it is to bottle early, so that your wines are ready for the show. Furthermore, the criteria were discussed as to what dry, off-dry, medium sweet and sweet meant for the Pontefract Open Show.
Pontefract Open Show: Virtual Wine Circle Competition
At the last meeting, we spoke about a scoring system for the virtual wine circle class at Pontefract Open Show – to be held on August 15, 2009. It was decided that the system we shall use is the UC Davis scoring system, where the wine is judged against itself, meaning that it is judged upon it’s own merits. The tasting sheets and guidelines that the judges will be using at the Pontefract Open Show are available on the forum. There was also a separate tasting sheet for new wine-tasters to learn some descriptors.
Airspace should be no lower than the flange. The label that will be sent to the entrants should go between the seams of the bottle (about 1 inch from bottom). The provided, purple caps (unused!) should be used. No other caps will be accepted.
There are no restrictions on how many wines you can enter for each class. Entries for the Pontefract Open Show should be sent by August 8th, 2009. Each entry will cost 35p. Labels will be sent out this week.

Wine Tasting
The winetasting was conducted with the chosen wine, Lindemans Bin 45 Cabernet Sauvignon 2006. The tasting sheet (!TastingSheet.pdf) was used to assess the wine. It was difficult for all members to find the wine, but many found comparisons, which made for an interesting and comparative tasting!

Winemaking News
New news for Grapefest 2009! We have the normal supplier Dave Howgego and a new supplier Brian (cellar rat on the forum). We will have opportunity to our “regular” grapes: Cillieguilio, Trebbiano, Sangiovese, and Grenache. From Brian, we may have access to Pinot Noir from France and a red (Bob has forgotten the varietal) from Portugal. Bob has a sort of "promise" on 3 tons of Seyval from a UK-grape grower. All are welcome to attend and learn about grape wine making! If you are interested in buying some grapes, let Bob know early enough, so no one goes short.

GrapeFest will be held on September 12, 2009 in Knottingley, West Yorkshire (also known as “Bob’s house” GPS: WF11 0DL). Some reminders to keep in mind for the next Virtual Wine Circle:- Please don’t drink too much before the circle meeting. Just because you’re at home, doesn’t mean you’re alone at virtual wine circle.
- Please remember good manners. No cursing.
- Please be courteous to others.
- Please try to stay on topic. The presenters put a lot of work into their presentations. There’s always a free-for-all chat at the end.
- Please remember to voice your opinion about how this should run. We’re always happy for constructive criticism and/or positive input!
- Presenters & the ones with the “virtual gavel” are to be yellow. The rest of the participating guests should keep their colours white.
- If you want to ask a question, please demarcate it with a “Q” at the beginning of the line. This helps the person answering the questions filter out the others’ comments to the questions.
- If you want to raise an issue of any type, “RH” (for raising hand) is a good way to get the yellow (wo)man’s attention.
