  • PET Bottles

I'd like to use these to bottle some beer I'm making rather than glass due to the cost. Question is are they OK to use? How long will they keep beer?

The other concern I have is that I have before made ginger beer (River Cottage recipe) in old lemonade bottles which, due to the carbonation, inflated so much that they wouldn't stand up on their own any more. Do these PET bottle keep there shape under pressure or will I have to release the pressure every now and then?

    Thanks in advance,

Beer should be fine. After all, the Coopers ones are brown PET.

If you over prime, you'd have to be careful. Most ginger beer is also fine, but as soon as they can't be depressed, you'd have been better off chilling them down to prevent over carbonation......
Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are sexy.

    Some blog ramblings

I'm sure pet is fine for short term beer storage. I've heard rumour that river cottage recipe is lethal because of over carbonated bottles. Seems stupid giving out dodgy recipes to beginners on national tv....

          Thanks for the replies.

I have bought some of these so I will see how it goes. I was going to use these until I had build up a supply of empty glass bottles. Hadn't thought of making a withdrawal from the bottle bank!

We use Pet bottles in our U-Brew all the time for Beer, Cider and Coolers. The product will not last quite as long in a pet bottle as it will in glass but if you plan on consuming the product with in a year you will be good to go. The reason there is a time difference is pet will allow the transfer out of your Co2 gradually over time. So eventually the stuff inside goes flat. This is a very slow process though.

A year ?!?! I was thinking about month

Another question has come to mind. How long to the actual PET bottles last? Aside from accidental damage do the PET bottle deteriorate over time?

As long as cared for years. It is when they get scratched inside that they can cause a problem. I have found that the caps are usually the issue and they are cheap to replace. Soak out stains do not scrub them out. Rinse out with hot tap water as soon as empty this will get rid of any residual sugars so no bacteria can get a grip inside drain upside down on a peg or a post of some kind until drained and dry. No dish washer as they will melt the bottle actually had a customer do that showed me the twisted bottle should have been in a art gallery.
