So this is what the little critters look like

Fermenting shows no mercy to the beginner

Very interesting. Usually I only get to see them close up once I have squashed them - which results in them being unrecognisable!!

The question is - HOW TO GET RID OF THEM?
I've used all the usual sprays and sticky hanging thigs but still the blighters are there. They drive me nuts and not even the winter gets rid of them altogether - still one or two hardy ones around.

here is a link of how to control fruit flies -- looks like locating the breeding area or source is the answer. Cheers DAW

            From the site:-

To monitor the area, use a Gold Stick trap. These traps use a fly sex lure to attract flies to their doom.

            Gets in everywhere!

I'm not sure I would want to see anything so lurid as fly sex going on in my winemaking area.

Agreed - lets get at them by removing the source (decaying organic matter and the other favourable conditions that they enjoy). If we can remove that then the sex thing will not be able to happen.

So it seems dude, all fermenting has ceased, a complete room clearout and sanitize is in progress, those critters are feeding on any form of splashes, where ever they are

10% sulphite solution in a spray bottle will help tremendously....
i ahd a fruit fly problem last yeasr, and spillage (not cleaned up properly I might add) was the cause

Can't you just leave a dish with a bit of whatever it is that the flies like to eat outside? So they all congregate there and not in your wine.
