  • Freezing apples for cider

    Hello
I think I read somewhere that if you chop up the apples and place them in the freezer that they almost juice themselves. Has anyone tried this method?
    Cheers

Yes, I pressed mine through a muslin-lined colander and then hung the residue in a jelly strainer overnight, squeezing it every now and then, I out nearly all of the juice this way.

I have frozen apples and then thawed them and pressed them using my bladder press, they juice really easily this way.

So in truth, it's just a case of how big a freezer you have!

Which reminds me, I must enquire about the cost of renting a "fridge" trailer. I can get that down to a comfortable minus 25

The faster you freeze a fruit, the larger the ice crystals in the fruit cells become, the crystals burst the walls of the cell, and therefore allow more juice to be extracted from it.
