Brewers Caramel

I have (I think) been making some of this today. It is after all burnt sugar.

If anyone has tasted the proper product could you help me out.

What colour is it? - is it golden or dark brown?
How does it taste? - mellow, sweet and a touch burnt or nutty and quite burnt?
