Now, do I spend £20 on an oversized potato masher, or do I stick to the old favourite (sanitised arms)?

I use a garden hoe , I bought a brand new one and painted it with a few coats of food grade paint I had on hand from refurbishing a basket press.
it works brilliantly , great for getting the bottom of the must all stirred up which promotes heathier ferments than just a punching down action.

been using it for 5 years now. never found a better tool.
