  • First grape wine for me.

A friend of mine has got a few grape vines and has recently told me i can have all of his grapes this summer if i wish as he knows i make wine. Ive never made wine with grapes before do you think its better to freeze the grapes first to extract more juice as i dont have a press or anything like that? and what sort of quantities of grape would i need to make to the gallon roughly?

    Jake,
No need to freeze, but you may want to add pectic enzyme at the start to aid extraction. 8 kilos of fruit will net you about a gallon, more or less, although I would suggest aiming for a minimum of 5 gallons if possible. A gallon of wine will go very fast.

Think about ice wine? Freezing has some benefits for all types of fruits and berries or grapes when making wine. Depends what kind of wine that you want to make. And also the time that you have when harvesting. DAW
