  • Ingredients and frustration.....

How's this for a bit of frustration.......

I've been on a mission for a while...... trying to track down buckwheat honey.

I usually got to Paynes at Hurstpierpoint. They're very helpful but don't have a huge range..... they tend to stock the more "popular" UK and EU honeys.

Last time I went up there, the chap reckoned that although he doesn't keep buckwheat honey, he could probably get it in a 25 kg bucket (apparently it's not considered "good" honey by the purists).

This time, I asked but he said that his supplier doesn't even keep it like that.

    Damn, damn, damn!

It has a reputation for being a good mead making honey.

I found a place in London that sells 227g for £8.50 plus postage and another place (can't remember where) that does 340g jars for £5 (+ p&p of course).

So I've been looking further afield.

The http://www.beefolks.com/ are in Maryland and do buckwheat in all sorts of sizes. The problem isn't the cost of the honey, but the cost of the shipping. For instance, a 1 gallon container (which apparently is 12lb in weight) is "only" 54$US, but the shipping is 69.50$US (via USPS which is the cheapest, but slowest) a grand total of 123.50$US or £77.29 per gallon which equates to £6.44 a lb.

Yes, if I bought it in a 5 gallon container, it does get cheaper, but it's still 180.00$US for the honey and 219.50$US for the shipping or 399.50$US/£250.27 per 5 gallons or £4.18 per lb.

The price when bought in 5 gallon containers is expensive but not unmanageable, except I only need 3 to 3 1/2 lb's per gallon so I'm certainly not gonna go over the top and get a 5 gallon container.

    Damn! this is frustrating.

I did manage to find some info about a bloke in Bulgaria who had 25000kg of it, for 3€ a kilo, but the link seems to have disappeared (not that I know whether it was up to date or not....), so I've managed to find a link to a bloke in Poland who, apparently, seems to have 3000kg of it. It seems to be in jars, but I couldn't work out what the size of the jar was (the picture seemed to be, probably, 1kg).

So I'm gonna have to search for his link again and email him as he had "price negotiable" on his link/ad.

I still don't understand quite why it seems to be such "gold dust". It's not as if it's a "complete unknown", and while there was an article about it's apparently wonderous properties (which has since been condemned as "bad science") a couple of years ago - there does seem to be a lot of info about it, just very limited availability.

    Maybe I'm just looking for a miracle ? I don't know......

    regards

    JtFB

p.s. Oh and in the end, I got myself a 1.36kg/3lb bucket of Mexican "Clear" and Italian Chestnut (both quite dark in colour and apparently strong tasting) and a small 227g jar of "English Heather" to back sweeten/flavour the gallon of Heather honey Mead I made last year.

Sounds quite complicated to me, John. I think I will just stick with grapes for now.

Ha ha! well one of the gallons that I sorted through last week, was "Greek" honey from Lidl. It's turned out very good i.e. sweet tasting but not so sweet according to the hydrometer......

The buckwheat is a bit of a mission though, lots of places have sold out till autumn........though they still list it, but label it as sold out.

I suppose I could just drive to Poland and collect it

        Hey ho!

I would like to understand what flavour/quality honey adds.

I quite fancy having a blast adding some to UK red grapes this year.

Has anyone tried chapitalisation of red grapes wine with honey.

Personally no, but I'd bet one or two people will have tried making a pyment.......

                Or maybe try this one.............

It does include a tiny amount of buckwheat honey though.....

                regards

I've just bottled a pyment, infact the same recipe you're referring to.

Its come out good, although a little too hot/mediciny for me just yet. Shows real promise in a few months time when the aftertaste calms down. Others have said how early a drinker this is so maybe i am unlucky.

Deep red, although not a particularly dark finish, imagine darkest rose? Strong, good flavour and sweetness.

Oh and~I didnt have buckwheat so just replaced with normal orange blossom or whatever it was i was using at the time.

                      Cheers for the suggestion.....

I'd guess that the specialist grains that they sell/mill will be imported. Buckwheat isn't a big crop here (or particularly small for that matter).

It's just such a wind up that the honey is used in confectionery and baking industry - except they probably have contacts to get it by the truck load.

Plus the small amount that seems to be available in small quantities, does appear to be very expensive, probably because there isn't the call for it (as far as I can find out the UK honey nazis don't think of it as good honey.........?).

I'm guessing that if I want some it's looking more and more like I'm gonna have to pay through the nose for it (found 1 place that sells it for £5 per 340g jar - that's dearer than heather honey!).

                      Ah well, I'll keep looking.....

                      regards

                        John, another option for you.

5 US gallons, or 60 lbs. for £123.00 ($200 USD)...

Again, it's in the States, but less expensive than other options I've seen mentioned. Might be worth looking into what the shipping cost is.

I notice that thats actually 20$ more than the beefolks Steve, plus without going through the shop facility, I'm guessing that the shipping would be higher as it seems that localharvest are in California.....
whereas the beefolks are in Maryland.

It maybe that my only current hope, if it does turn out that my only option is to ship from the US, is if the £/$ ratio changes in my favour a bit more......but that'd probably be worse news for you guys...

Thanks very much for the pointer though, much appreciated.

                            Ah, right you are.

With regard to localharvest, the organization's website is based in Santa Cruz, California, however, the participating farms are located throughout the US, and the products ship direct from the farms. In fact, you can link directly to many of the participating merchant's websites and purchase from them directly.

                              An answer from Poland......

The guy who's advertising the buckwheat has replied.

The honey is in 1.3 kg jars (conveniently about right for a gallon), so I've said I'm interested in 6 jars.

It's just the shipping to get prices for etc.

I'm gonna have to ask one of the blokes at work (Polish), if he's got any ideas as it would be better to keep the cost as cheap as possible.

Oh and he said it's about 5 GBP per jar (about 1.75 per lb).

                              hey ho! getting closer....

                              regards
