    • Was told to come and introduce meself

      Duff sent me a mail

Welcome to wines at home mate, I know of you from Tom's forum, feel free to announce yourself in the new members forum, you'll recieve a good welcome, It's good to see enthusiasm within the hobby which I see you have, feel free to ask as many questions as you like, there's some great winemakers here that can offer great advice, as well as Tom's forum we're all here to help if we can. Enjoy the hobby as we all do.
So i guess i had better introduce meself then.

I am 24 and live in Weybridge in surrey, i am an IT systems admin and work in hampshire at present right next to blackbushe airport.
I started brewing wine about a month ago (brewed beer before once) after speaking to my girlfriends dad who used to make wine himself.

Ever since chatting a month ago i picked it all up very quickly and invested some money into the hobby.

      Wine equipment:
      Vigo 5.3l wine press
      Vigo pulpmaster
      2x fermentation bins
      Hydrometer and test tube
some 10 Demijohns (donated by my girlfriends dad)
      all the chemicals etc
      Redesigned my garden shed
      2x Brew belts
1x Greenhouse drip heater (still to play with)
      Corker and bottles etc
And a few more smaller items

      Wines:
      First stage of fermentation
1x gallon of elderflower wine which is loosing its bitterness fortunatly (from dried elderflowers)

      Second stage of fermentation
2x gallon apple and white grape wines (from hand picked apples)
1x gallon of Organic apple and mead cider (tastes beautiful picked from a friends apple tree and added organic new zealand clover and forest honey)

I am going to be buying some elder plants for fresh elderberrys and elderflowers
Plus i am looking to plant some grape vines so will keep you all informed as to how it goes.

I will post a few pics below:

Here are some more pics of BennyBoy hard at work playign with my new fruit press.

I made the stand out of a chair i brought using a hacksaw and a file, the Benny pressing for england

I have an old shed at the bottom of the garden which i put a display cabinet in that my old dear didn't need anymore. by the way there is only two Dj's in there becuase it has a mirror at the back

I can store a few things in the shed but the good stuff lives indoor's

just racked 2 and a half gallons into these two gallons. heater seems to be working fine, although i have a green house heater that i am going to put in the other side of the cabinet

            • Welcome BennyBoy!

I live in the US, also in the IT industry, and am most certainly bored at work.

Looks like you have the beginnings of a nice setup there.

                • Greeting from across the pond...

Hello everyone, OKie from the "Grapes of Wrath" Appellation. We are more famous for the spirited Sour Mash Corn Whisky, or "White Lightning" or "Fire Water"; than wine! My ancestors made wine in UK, France, Germany, Maryland, Kentucky, Arkansas and before STATEHOOD in OKiehoma (Native Americans). It was considered a "Civilized" libation (although illegal to make in OKiehoma until 1958), schooling in the craft began at age 5. Wine and Meads were made from a variety of fruit and vegetable. From gathering to corking, it was hard, back-breaking, hot, sweat, painful work....truly a labor of love. Pride was the moment of a family toast before Thanksgiving Dinner - where for the first time it was announced that my participation had some small contribution to the fine taste of last years wine. The same may be said here, hopefully you will agree that I can make some small contribution to "Wines Made at Home".

                  Keith

But great wines are not so simple it takes a little tlc and experience, welcome to wines at home.
