  • Disastrous day

Well Richard _S came round yesterday afternoon to collect his bottles from the Telford show, so whilst having a little chin wag over a cup of tea we decided to mess around with a bottle capper I had offered him...and this was the result......

The bottle slipped and tapped a bullet size hole in the d/j, as the Beaverdale Barolo wine Poured out I tried to lift it into the sink to find the whole of the bottom of the d/j fell off and we ended up with this.......

Richard and I, after the initial shock thought it was quite funny, the wife however didn't, moreso because I called through for the camara before commencing the clean up.

Well could have been worse, I use a glass carboy to ferment my wine in.

Can you imagine the bottom coming out of one of those suckers when full

I use plastic demijohns, is there really a huge difference between the two?

Arggg don't wan't to start this debate again .
Actualy I do prefer glass for maturing in, the fact is the d/j more than likely was defective anyway just awaiting it's moment.

Yes....plastic ones interact with the outside world, this is why glass is my preferred option always.

Karl sorry to hear of your mishap dude, what a total bummer, (and an evenings worth of wine gone in one go)

May have to fork out for some glass ones for aging then. I've seen them on Ebay but either huge postage or pick-up from miles away

I remember the guy at the home brew shop saying that plastic was ok for fermenting but not for aging now I recall.

Charity shops and car boots are worth a look

Definitely, that's what got me started - was wondering round a car boot sale and saw 5 DJs sitting there. Picked them up along with CJJ Berry for £2 I think it was.

Also, keep an eye on freecycle, I collected another 20 DJs that way (split them with a friend) and the guy I had got them from had another 80 or so! There's a slow but steady trickle of them on the list around here.

Sorry to hear about the accident Duff. That's some hole, was it the corker that connected with the DJ, or the bottle?

Depends which part of hampshire you're in doesn't it, because there's a bloke in Sussex (West) that's got a load of half gallon DJ's. 25 pence each, ideal for ageing as you only have to bottle half a gallon at a time a.k.a. 3 bottles worth.

                              regards
