Well a quick update. I have broken another pair. I ordered the a 'Stellar' pair from ebay - something completely different appeared.

I have now ordered Zyliss.

Before I break these - can I ask do I need to peel the garlic before pressing with a Zyliss?

Nope. But you'll have to clean out the chamber more often since the skins will accumulate in the bottom. Not really "clean" I suppose... you just have to stick your finger in there from time to time and pull out the gunk.

Also, I noticed that Amazon has a couple of Zyliss models. This is the one I have.

I don't know if it's any better or worse than the others (it seems to be more expensive, however). I like mine. But admittedly, I haven't smashed my way through mucho pounds of garlic in a single sitting.

I fear I have bought the cheaper one's - Susi2?.
However they do come with a five year guarantee - that might be interesting!

I silly thing is I break them in ordinary use - the big garlic pressing is yet to be started.

I don't know if this is any use to you,but years ago I bought a rubber tube thingy for peeling garlic. It's green, about 5 inches long and has an inch and a halfdiameter. You place the garlic inside and just roll it on the table - like rolling a plasticine sausage. Nodules inside take off the skins in seconds and then I put the peeled cloves into the liquidiser and then freeze in usable gobbets. (About a heaped teaspoonful or so).

Unfortunately I can't remember where I got the tube thingy, but I've had it for at least 20 years so it was well worth the money I paid for it.

I'll have a trawl on the web and if I find anything I'll post a link.

OK here's the thing I mean. It's in the States as this was the first one I came across but I'm sure a UK supplier can be found

I've seen quite a few reviews of the Zyliss 12040 containing complaints that the the non-stick coating peels off and have been wondering how long it'll be before you're trying a Rosle http://www.amazon.co.uk/HAUS-MARKETI...3712600&sr=1-1

In my garlic pursuits I have discovered peelers. 99p Really really work - had to share.

Seems cheap enough. I find a knife works just as well well. Simply lay the flat of the blade on the garlic clove, give it good whack, and the skin falls right off.

Tried that - I am too heavy handed and they get crushed LOL

Might make your Zyliss press last a bit longer if garlics already part crushed.
