Hmm. Looks like HDPE to me - OK for fermenting, will stain, and not ideal for long term strorage. Perhaps worth a question. Odd size too really - when you start to think about racking etc etc. Wide mouth 'OK' for cleaning, but will create a greater surface area when storing.Last edited by Cellar_Rat; 21-08-2011, 05:36 PM.Gluten free, caffeine free, dairy free, fat free – you gotta love this red wine diet!

Nah, that bottle's polypropylene.
Not sure about oxygen diffusion. I'll try and have a look later.Dutch Gunderson: Who are you and how did you get in here?

Which links me nicely back to my previous post from 21 August:
I was at my local plastics stockist the other day and saw hey have some "food grade" polyethylene containers (NB they are not PET, they are thick walled and opaque): 25 litre, shaped like a jerry can with a tap at the bottom. They would be ideal for storing my red grape wines where I have no particular storage place
Anyone care to comment?

Those supermarket bottles are really not suitable for long term storage. Although I did keep a Christmas Puding wine in there for 6 months and wound up with a rather pallatable Christmas Pudding SherrYDutch Gunderson: Who are you and how did you get in here?
