  • Where can you get 1/2 gallon demijohns?

When I was a lad my Dad had amongst the gallon demijohns a couple of 1/2 gallon ones that were very useful when the total volume of wine doesn't fit into exact gallon containers. I'd like to get some myself, but they appear to be heard to come by. Does anyone know where I can get some?

I live in Worthing, Sussex, UK before anyone asks.

    Cheers

    Kieron.

No=one seems to do them new anymore...

eBay seems to be the best place, but keep an eye out in your local home brew store, they sometimes have them 2nd hand

www.freecycle.co.uk is a good place too

Morrison's do 2 litre glass jars full of scrumpy for £3.99 you need to modify an optic cork to take an airlock but they are quite good.

    hope this helps

I like the idea of 2 gallons of cider for four quid! and then you get to make wine in it!

      No down side.

      Thanks

        Can you explain 'modify'

as the center hole of the optic cork is slightly larger than an airlock stem, would silicon sealant be OK to use.
I know some have a mould inhibitor in them, but I think the one for sealing fish tanks would be fine.

        Opinions please ?

Selotape wrapped around the stem of the airlock works ok

                That does surprise me.....

I'd have thought there would be sanitising issues with selotape (or the glue on selotape)

I've used Blu-tac to do the same job. It works well and as it's on the outside there are no worries about hygene

Jammy g*t. Which boot sale was that at? Went round 2 last Sun but only saw 1 dj. If you see any 5 gal fermenters that you don't need let me know, Mark wants some.

True Hippie but these were the plastic 5 gal fermenters, nothing to shout about, but one is in use already, the second is undergoing a good bleaching (full of mould). But hey for a few pence each can't go wrong

I have a 5 gal beer pressure barrel going free if he's interested, all he needs to do is drill a hole the size of a d/j bung and it's good to go... let us know and it's yours
