I have made quite a few of these kits from the cheap and cheerful end of the spectrum. When I started with wine making again a little over a year ago, the first kit I made was a Youngs Sauvignon Blanc. These are 1 gallon (6 bottle) kits that you need to add sugar to. From the range, I have made the following:
Sauvignon Blanc (many times)
Chardonnay (four kits)
Riesling (once, I don't like this one)
Zinfandel (twice)
Cabernet Sauvignon (many times)
These kits are a great way to get into home wine making as they are so quick to make and can be consumed right away but are better after a little ageing. The Chardonnay and Sauv Blanc kits will usualy ferment to .996 or lower in 5 to 7 days and will clear in 1 to 2 days.
These kits require sugar to be added at the start so are not the easiest of kit to get started but require very little (if any) attention until fermentation is complete. Rack off the lees, filter (if you have to) then bottle all in one day and the wine will be drinkable within a couple of days.
I buy these kits from Wilko's for £6.79, by the time you add the cost of the sugar you are looking at £1.25 a bottle, give or take a few pence.
Easyness of making 4/5
Flavour 3/5
Value for money 3/5
