Relvalation.!!.. I got to thinking about how the vac works in degassing . Edmonton, Alberta Canada is situated at an elevation over 2,000 feet. There is less atmospheric pressure...the CO2 gases can more easily escape out of the carboy. That is why I didn't see much in the way of gas. It is possible
Atmospheric pressure will effect what is happening with your wine. But I think the temperature and age has more to do with degassing than anything. Our house is at 6000 feet and I have had one major explosion when degassing. I'm more careful now.
No, not even one and the camera was laying right there. But I can tell you my hands were full for a bit. The explosion sneaks up on you, nothing happening so I give her one more, and look out.
I did some searching on the web, and found a top secret US Government test image that I think was taken of Jeffs' place at that specific moment in time.

Jeff
6000 feet now that is way up there! How does one insight a "major explosion" during degassing????
Start slow, and build up the effort over a couple of minutes. If you see any signs of a large escape of gas from the wien. STOP and wait for it to subside.
