No, a grommit is not a bung. It's a small piece of rubber that fits into the hole you've drilled in the cap. Easily available from you nearest HBS. I'll try to find a picture later.

I really wouldn't go with the tape and pinprick method if I were you.

How does the gas escape then if it is a piece of rubber?

Imagine a small tube of rubber about half an inch long, and about as wide as a 1p piece. It has two flanges and a hole through it to take the airlock. You push this into the hole you've made in the cap/lid. The flanges a) stop it going all the way through and b) make it airtight.

I have just sent them an email regarding the postage charges.

They say they charge £2 for items that weigh less than 1kg which is a hell of a lot if you only want to order a handful of grommets!
