  • metal barrel question

I have managed to get a complete Boots metal brew barrel off of freecycle. It is very clean without any chips, etc inside.
The question is, will it be ok for any type of wine making or brewing in. As you dont really see them anymore, I dont want to start something off in there only to find out its been spoiled ....help please..???

I think that barrel is junk, best if you give it to a elderly relative

What exactly is it made of ?

Metal doesn't normally "chip" unless it's been coated with something i.e. paint, enamel etc.

If it's stainless steel, there should be no reason, other than thing's like seals/stoppers that might have a screw thread and that the thread has been "cross threaded". So it no longer holds an air tight seal. Otherwise, it should be usable I'd have thought.

After all, stainless is what most commercial brewing kit is made of, it's easily cleaned and doesn't leave any taint/metallic taste.

Maybe you could post a picture so we know the piece of kit that you're talking about...

      regards

Should be fine for beer making, but I'm not sure it would be as much use for Winemaking, unless it has the facility to add an airlock (or unless you wish to carbonate some wine.

I got 2 boots aluminium kegs, they are coated on the inside with a very thick non-stick coating and a hammerite finish on the out side.

Nothing wrong with them, use them an a day to day basis

Well I don't actually "brew" in them, I store and dispense the beer from them....you have got the screw on cap with the pressure release valve in, haven't you ?

Got Woodforde's Wherry in one and Nelson's Revenge in tother.
