  • Mulled wine

    Hi everyone
I want to make some mulled wine using a DJ of elderberry wine I made a couple of months ago. I need to serve 20 - 25 people but they will only be having 1 glass probebley as its a group of older ladies. I have found a few recipes but am not sure how much spices will be needed for this quantity. I would prefer to make it up the day before and just reheat it if that would be ok
has anyone got a recipe they could recommend?

You won't need the whole DJ of wine.

The Schwartz Mulled Wine packet gives the following recipe for 2.5 pints:

    1 75cl bottle red wine
    300ml Water
    300ml Orange juice
    3 tbs Castor sugar
    1 sachet Schwartz spices
    150ml Brandy
    1 sliced orange
    1 sliced apple

Heat wine, water, orange juice sugar and spice to just below boiling point and hold temperature for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove sachet, stir in brandy and fruit.

I would say you'd need to double up on this for the amount of servings you need, but the easiest way is to do a test run with water and see how many glasses you fill with two and half pints, and make adjustments accordingly.

    Hope this helps

It seems a shame to use a relatively "good" wine in mulled wine. I've always opted for using a red wine that is okay, but nothing special simply because the flavours of the spices tend to drown out the flavours of the wine.

Maybe I'm just being tight, but I'd be inclined to drink the Elderberry on it's own, and use something else for mulling (like my australian red kit wine that STILL hasn't matured into anything special after being bottled and stored for 6 months!)

      Just my two penn'oth folks...

PS - I was thinking about having some mulled wine later on today coz it's bl00dy cold here in the Midlands

Cold? You should try the North Norfolk coast right now

Definitely agree with Lush, if you are going to mull it you might as well use a red that is not up to much on its own

It ain't just North Norfolk, I was in Beccles on Thursday morning, crossing to March (Camb's) for my reload and I can certify that both locations were effing freezin'. I was warmer by the time I had to park up on the side of the A21 (Sevenoaks), but only just!

East Anglia in general is VVV nice, but it do get a bit on the "parky" side

I'd also vote for cheap red and the schwarz spice pack. You can always just add a little more sugar and it'd be just like drinking glasses of "Gluhwein" at one of the bars on either the "Kitzbuhlerhorn" or the "Hannenkahm" .

Topped off with a couple of glasses of "Weizen bier" and you go back out on the slopes and thats it..........instant Franz Klammer!
