  • Is this supposed to happen with Bentonite?

Made some Peach wine in March and been trying to clear it ever since.

I understand that this wine can be a bugger to clear so I added some bentonite this morning to the wine.

After 20 mins this was the result. Seem there is loads building up at the bottom.....but does it not seem way too much!? Or will it compact?

Really pleased it worked so fast!

    Seems about right... Good stuff

It should compact down over a couple of days...

A little pectolase might help it along too

        Good good

Fruits like peaches, plums, etc are notorious for pectin...
Patience is a virtue I'm afraid but once you get it started it's clears brilliantly

You seem to mention 20 minutes ChrisG, bentonite is refined clay so it's not going to work instantly.

See what it's like in a week or so........

You might also try keeping it somewhere cold, like if you've got enough fridge space........

What other clearing methods have you tried ?

          regards

I have had similar results with Bentonite. As other people have said, give it a week or so to compact.

for the first couple of days, give the DJ a sharp twist a couple of times a day. This will help dislodge the sediment clinging to the sides.

Thanks for the advice, but it did start working after 20mins.

I tried using insiglass but that didnt work a few months back.

              Bentonite is great!!

                That looks great.
I bought some bentonite last week to try in the tropical wine that I made quite a few months back, but is refusing to clear....
I just haven't got round to adding it yet.
But I hope that it does the trick

I've got some, but I either just leave stuff to clear naturally or if I've got my impatient head on, I use "kwik clear" - that takes about 48 hours and so far, it's never failed to work.

If you don't mind posting internationally, then you can always check some of the international sellers....... lots of the chaps/chapesses over the pond swear by "sparkloid" (there's a "hot" and cold version.... I don't know the difference or which might be best).

I agree, Bentonite is my favorite when clearing wine

I've found if you put your wine in a cool place a few hours before adding the bentonite, it works really well

It should say on the pot, however, 1 rounded teaspoon per gallon, mixed into a paste vigorously and left 15-30 mins before putting into fv or dj.

I usually mix it up with a whisk in a mixing bowl with either warmed brew or water. I then stir with a plastic spoon handle every hour or so for the first night, then leave it in the cool (garage for me). The last lot of wine I used it on took 2-3 days to clear, I then racked again, left 36 hours and bottled.

My first post, so I may be doubted but it does work a treat.
