  • 2 Litre demijohns from Westons cider containers

In Morrisons and Asda they sell Westons cider in glass bottles, they have a screw top and are about £4

I'm interested in using these to :

    Make smaller batches (testers)
    &
    For topping up

Any idea where I can get bungs small enough to fit into the heads of these so I can put an airlock on?

    TIA

You might find a cork bung will squish down small enough.

Alternatively, drill the cap to take an airlock grommet.

I live not far from Weston's. I was out there on Moday, and I was eyeing up those bottles as potential DJs

The caps have long since been discarded, I didn't think they'd make a good enough seal after being opened.

        ukric:

I can only tell you what I have seen. Since I live in Canada, it may be of little value. The half gallon jugs that I have seen (not many to be honest) take a #6 bung. A 6.5 might work but I think it will stick up too high and be easily knocked out.

When I ran an HBS, I suggested that people bring there jugs into the store if possible, so that we could ensure the fit.

There are the caps that have a drilled hole and screw on.

you can always shave a standard bung down slightly.

Hmmm think I'm gonna have a wander to the local HBS in a bit (when it opens....why am I up so early ) and ask if i can try a few different ones to see if there is anything, if all else fails it might be a case of whittling down a standard bung.

Not bad tho demijohns that come with alcohol already for £4

...erm... wouldn't they be a bit small for what you were planning on blocking up??????

What is a cock bung anyway?

ukric, a member on here told me this when I needed advice on using Scrumpy bottles, and it work's great, I think it was Zeb (thanks Zeb)

You need a 'airlock grommit' and a 'optic bung', sorry for the crudeness of the picture, fit the grommit into the optic bung (tight fit) and then the airlock into the grommit, it fits the scrumpy bottles a treat

I use quite a few of those Westons 2 litre flagons (trail batches + for odd bits) and a tapered wine bottle cork drilled for a standard airlock and with that airlock pushed well in fits pefectley.

Hang on and I'll take some pics.............

Found a few (from trial gall of apple juice + dehydrated apple to enhance flavour and from a 6 gall batch of blackberry that had more sediment than usual and didn't give 5 completely full DJs when racking off):

P.S. When I said drilled tapered corks corks I meant you have to drill them yourself.
