This is not about starters. I take a sample from strongly fermenting wine and freeze it. I only fill the bottle 4/5 (200ml in a 250ml bottle) and leave the lid loose for the first night until solid.

PS does anyone know where I can get a supply of 250ml pet bottle CHEAP!

I have never done a starter, but I don't see why this should make a difference - what was the SG of the starter? and was it just sugar and water?

Sounds good. I can;t see why this shouldn't work 100%.
My only thought: is the cost of the ingredients greater than that of buying the yeast in the first place - dunno.

6 sachets of yeast cost me 9euro plus postage so 6 starters from 1 sachet costs 25cent per starter but a pinch of citric acid and 200gms sugar and 500ml apple juice so there is a good bit of saving to be had plus im going to try a bigger one if this one works

You dont need to make a new starter....

just dont use all of the first one, and top it up with more apple juice sugar and acid...it will live for months

you dont need to freeze it either, just use half and pop the remainder in the fridge. when you need it again, its good to go.

AJ carton labelling normally states something like after opening keep in refrigerator and use within 5 days.

                      Am I worrying unnecessarily?

P.S. When our neighbours got stuck in Thailand after the volcanic ash cloud caused the airports to shut down, I assured them that we had to drink that almost full bottle of Pinot Grigio in their fridge as we thought it surely would have gone off before they eventually returned.

I made a yeast starter last for about 6 months a while back, no adverse effects, once it is fermenting, it wont go off

Heres a thought, I have a 54l v slow fermenting apple & elderflower number - is this the primary yeast still going or ML or something else. If it is primary yeast I have got a perpetual LAVIN v1116 yeast factory.

Althought I might very well vinegar this one!
