  • Kits and sulphite/sorbate additions

A few things that are puzzling me in kit instructions.

I've always read to do the following

5 ml 10% solution per gallon.
Add Meta at the same time as Sorbate.
    Add these after de-gassing.

In the recent kits I've done however

The meta comes in a packet. 4.5g to be added to 5 gallon, before degassing, then after this has been done add the Sorbate.

I'm hoping I've got my maths right here...

100g with water added to 1L is 0.1g per 1ml

    5 ml x 5 for the 5 gallons, = 2.5g sulphite

So why is the packet in the kit 4.5g?

Is it because when they expect you to de-gas they expect the effectiveness of 2g will be 'lost' ?

I always thought that the reason for adding the two at the same time was to avoid geranium?

Thanks for doing the maths on that one ukric! I always thought the couple kits I've made had much more sulfite than a from scratch recipe.

I've always blindly added the sulphite, but never add the sorbate unless I'm eitehr sweetening it or the kit comes with an F pack.

It may be a little more sulphite in there than a scratch wine, that you have carefully cleaned everything properly.. Kit wines are made for the general public and maybe the not quite so well informed on Bob's strict hygiene practices. The extra sulphite should hopefully combat some of that, maybe.
