  • How much ?

I would like to take a liter of red wine from 11% to 20%.

How much wine do I replace with 40% vodka?

Do we have / is there any tables or formula for this - its been making my head hurt this afternoon!

2 litres of Vodka added to 4.54 litres of wine will give you 19.8685%

oops sorry Brian 500ml of 40% Vodka added to 1 litre 11% wine will give you 20.6666%

which will fit nicely into two wine bottles

Wouldn't Brandy work better for a Port style?

          plus some oak?

819ml of 11% ABV wine + 181ml of 40% vodka will combine to produce 1 litre of fortified wine with ABV of 20%.

So you need to replace 181ml of your wine with that vodka to get a litre with an ABV of 20%, calculated using Pearson Square + simultaneous equations, or Excel + iteration.

I see what you are saying David .....your calculation gives 1 litre of finished 20% wine

however my plan is better in soooooooo many ways as you end up with 2 bottles of Port style instead of 1 litre (with left over wine) which doesnt fit into a wine bottle and leaves you with a 250ml surplus wine

so there is no surplus to deal with....just two bottles of yumminess

but thanks for the precision it helps newbies work it out

                  Thanks chaps.

Seems I was a bit off them - heres the recipe (concoction)

                  150ml Vodka
120ml Cordial - Sainsbury Spiced winter cordial (blackberry and blackcurrant I think)
Topped up with Merlot to 1 litre
3 ml oak essence (Still Spirits)

Comes in slightly above 20%. Fruity light port or heavy winter punch!

                  Quite quite ples .. cheers

                    hmmm.

It seems I didn't allow for the volume of wine replaced by the cordial either!!

Does that 'cordial' contain alcohol? unless it contains 50% ABV, that mixture will only contain 14% ABV (Simpson's Rule?), unless that vodka is wayover previously stated % ABV
