  • Sanitizing

I've seen different discussions on different forums and I'm wondering, when sanitizing I have been swishing the solution around my carboys, or in my fermenter. I normally either toss the solution or in the case of a campden solution return it to the container. I then let the carboy or fermenter air dry assuming that the solution will work for some time after. With smaller items I wash in dish soap and hot water, rinse in cold, place in campden solution for maybe 15 minutes then let air dry. Is this enough contact? I repeat the same procedure when I am ready to start a batch.

I saw on the newsgroup, rec.crafts.winemaking, someone mentioned using Oxiclean. (this may be a U.S. product) Has anyone used this on their equipment? I normally use this product for laundry.

Do you have a spray bottle that makes it easyer.

From what I've read is he sufites gases sanitize so even just putting some in a bucket closing the lid would work.

On jack kellers web site it said two minute contact time, but I Have just rubbed down a sanitizing spoon or even tubes with solution and used right away.
Im not saying that right though, and I try not to do it Anymore.

Sounds like you are doing a good job, Paul. You can keep the sanitizer as long as it still looks clean and is still offensive to the nose. Gallon jug, quart jar, spray bottle, etc.

        thanks

I actually had not considered a spray bottle, but that would be very convenient when I'm working away from the immediate sink area.
