    Ah, ok thanks.

One other point - I don't have that much of an air gap at the top of my filled demijohns; would it be a good idea to siphon a little off before degassing?

Yes it would, especially at first as it may overflow

Here is the latest bit of de-gassing technology. Just tried it on the Pinot Grigio and it works very well. Do you want one Bob? Only £30 (drill not included)

I know this may be slightly off,but do you have to de-gas fruit wine like you do with kits.

I think you have to degas everything. Kit's say to degass by shaking the wine three times a day for three days (at least the kits I've done say this) but that seems to be the rubbish way to degas.

Not off topic at all. All wines need de-gassing otherwise you may have difficulty clearing them.

I have used the wine saver (vac u vin) on bottles of wine 6 months old and there was loads of gas still in there.

Ben, you will need a different way to de-gas the 5 gallon kit. 1 gallon can easily be picked up and shaken but the 5 gallon jobby might be a bit heavy

                          lol

                          my apologies dude
A US gallon is in fact 3.8 litres as you say

                          I stand corrected

No need for apologies, friend. It's just that 128 ounces is a far piece from 153 ounces and so recipes that come about in the UK are not made for American gallons and vice-versa and are often traded back and forth without forsight given to the difference in volume.

                            I think that makes sense...?
