  • Made a mistake

I started a Beaverdale Barolo 5 gallon wednesday night and its in a primary fermentation bin
    Ok here goes:

I thought i would have a taste of the wine so i picked up and unsanitised metal spoon and took some to drink (Very tired i usually use a baster).

I realised and thought what a numpty i was, so i crushed a campden tablet up and put it in.

The Fermentation has slowed (not a complete stop but slowed considerably)

This all happened within the space of half an hour.

So has my stupid mistakes messed anything up?
I am usually so careful, just wasn't with it tonight

Check the sg while you are at it Benny, it might have slowed down for a reason.

        Hum? easily done.

For smaller jobs i.e. checking/testing/tasting etc, I've got myself into a habit of rinsing everything under hot water, then spraying with "sanitising solution" and leaving it for a couple or 5 minutes.

The sanitising solution is taken from "First Steps" (by CJJ). It's 6 crushed campden tablets and 1 teaspoon of citric acid in a pint of water.

It doesn't last forever, but it only takes me a month or so to use that up and it's a "quick 'n easy" way of sanitising kit to make sure it's safe to put into a batch of whatever, without the worry or hassle of "have I made sure that everythings clean enough?" and having to run a full sterilisation/sanitation regime every time I just want to check the gravity of something, which is time consuming (and IMO, a complete PITA).....

You don't even need to rinse it off, as it's strong enough to kill off most, if not all, nasties but there's only a tiny amount on the kit/implements and not enough to cause problems i.e. stunning the yeast during an active ferment etc.

        I think that's correct

        regards

If the spoon wasn't actually dirty it shouldn't have done any harm. Perhaps I've just been lucky, but I don't sanitise everything I use when winemaking. For instance Hydrometer and jar get a rinse under the hot tap before use, as do spoons etc. and I have not had any spoilage problems so far.

The campden tablet has stunned the yeast, fortunatly you only added one, do as rjb suggests and airate the must, remember NEVER add campden tablets to an active ferment.
Jan is quite right there's no need to be too anal about steralising we can't achieve a sterile environment, it is good basic hygeine as with any food handling that we need to aim for.

Yeah i was a real numpty.
OK here goes i stirred the must it had a bubbly foam on top but i stirred that into the must and airiated it.

SG is at 1050 so no were near finished rich.

I suppose i like to spray everything once with my sanitising solution
