  • VWC Competition

The Labels should be with you soon for the wine competition on August 15th 2009 in conjunction with Pontefract Open show.

Please label and fill as shown in the picture, label to be placed with the bottom of the label just above the ridge at the bottle base, and in between the bottle seams.

Fill the bottles to the rim as indicated in the picture.

    There will be two classes:

White dry (the wine needs to be white or golden coloured and dry)
please write in the box provided (marked "class")..white dry

Write your name below the line marked "cover line" and what the wine is i.e. No1..or..youngs chardonnay

the wines will be judged as per normal wine competition, where places will be awarded

and an Open class, where you may enter anything.

Please write in the box provided (marked "class") which class you are entering that bottle into, and then below the line that says "cover line" write your name and what the wine is, and the sweetness level

i.e. mead dry....rose medium, red sweet, port

this is so we can arrange them in the order in which they will be judged (driest first, and lightest first)

the wines in this class will be judged using the UCDavis 20 point system, where the wine is awarded marks out of 20 and awarded gold, silver, bronze and honourable mention.
(marking sheet attached) order of judging is normally white dry, red dry, white medium, red medium, white sweet, red sweet etc etc

so in this class the wine isn't competing against other wines, it is merely being evaluated and given a score. This works well for you if you make "unusual" wines that dont fit competition criteria.

Will try to give everyone who enters as much feedback as possibl afterwards.

    please join in the fun...

if you havent signed up for VWC yet, please do so, it will be fun.

if you need bottles then drop me a PM and I will get them to you ASAP

    send filled bottles to:

    Bob Morton
    LDC House
    Stuart Road
    Pontefract
    West Yorkshire
    WF8 4PQ

to reach me by 8th Aug if possible

And before anyone feels the need to point it out

I know the print on the label is misaligned, I used a duff one (printer issue) so as not to waste a good one

thats my story and I'm sticking to it!

I, for one, would never point that out, Bob.

However, I would point out that you forgot to put the cap on the bottle.

Seriously, I started prepping mine last night. At first I wasn't entirely happy having to open 750ml bottles to fill the samples, but it does leave 500ml to taste to ensure the wine is sound.

Oh, who am I kidding? It leaves 500ml just to drink.

To be honest the Elderberry's I'll be submitting are slightly "tawny" coloured... I did try my best to prevent this but as nature goes it happened
I think I'm more upset myself, as they were a brilliant red 6 months ago just before the final racking

And I did take precautionary measures, Vit C etc...

Not to stray too far off the subject, but it's worth noting that vitamin C (ascorbic acid) can actually cause oxidation to occur under certain conditions. There's a technically detailed article here if you're interested.
