      I now undertsand our confusion...

      Mr Edwin T Belt (1972) says poisonous.

      Mary Aylett (1953) has other ideas. Often used.
      Cures weakness of the heart (!) and "its value as a specific against cancer has been testified to by a modern herbalist"

      Marigold petals have a long history or preservation as powers cnadies and wines with Monks / Elizabethans / herbalists

      Only the petals are used.

      Hope this adds to the confusion. For what its worth my votes with Mary!!
      Gluten free, caffeine free, dairy free, fat free you gotta love this red wine diet!

        Elderberry juice wine mmmmmmmmmm

        Martina found tetra paks of 100% Elderberry juice in a supermarket in Germany.......so.....Off to the supermarket i went, and bought the stuff, as She had a 15 litre fermenter empty *gasp* 3 litres Elderberry juice 3 litres Red Grape Juice 3 litres Pressed Apple juice 3 tsp Acid Blend (all she had) 1.5 tsp Minavit Ultra

          We now have 5 gallons of it on the go now. With untoasted, American Oak shavings. It's going to be a great wine, the ferment started right off. RC-212 yeast.

            so, busy winemaking days ahead, getting ready for the fed (virtual wine circle comp!) and other upcoming shows...

            racked and clearing: Neverending Juniper... I stabilized it at 1.020, it's been there for a year.
            racked and filtering: Foraging 2nd-try-after-dropping-the-first-5-gallons Wine (let's hope I don't drop this one, although it's in a better bottle now)
            racked and clearing: Luebeck Garden wine (a mix of all the stuff I had in my cupboard)
            racked and clearing: carrot wine
            racked and clearing: elderberry-american-oak wine
            started: Elderbery-Pineapple-Mahonia-Apple-4-cans-of-lychees-and-1-liter-of-grapefruit wine.
            2 liters of elderberry juice
            2 liters of pineapple juice
            1 liter of mahonia juice
            1 liter of grapefruit juice
            4 liters of apple juice
            4 cans of lychees
            1 bag of sultanas
            1.5 kg sugar
            water to 3 gallons
            ------------------
            3 gallons

            That's all I have at the go about now...

              Done!
              Got the foraging wine racked, filtered and bottled without (major) incident. (5 gallons)
              Got the Juniper wine racked, filtered and bottled without incident as well. (4 gallons)
              Luebeck Garden wine racked, bottled, filtered (1/2 gallon)
              Carrot wine (1 gallon) racked.
              Oaked Elderberry juice wine racked.

              Started the Lychee et al Wine the other night(3 gallons)
              Started a Hibiscus-Ginger wine (1 gallon) last night.

              I might try another roobois tea wine!

                quick update:

                racked the Lychee et al wine... Bubbling over after adding a liter of warm water to top it up to 3 liters. Moved to the shower to reduce the carnage!

                  Would just like to add that Ive definitely got the bug back after digging out this forum for info on liqueurs. I'd put all my winemaking stuff away about 18 months ago but having recently opened a bottle (or 2!) of my homemade elderberry wine thats been sitting for 3 years and it being amazingly good, Im in again and searching for wht to make next!!

                    I've got the bug more than ever now!

                    It's springtime, and my currants (red, white, black), gooseberries, vines (larry, curly and moe (mueller-thurgau), regina (regent) and roddy the riesling), 2 apple trees, 2 pear trees are coming into bloom. The elderberry trees/bushes are exploding, as is the rhubarb. I love spring!

                    I also got a great pre-b-day birthday gift from Bobby this weekend, and I'm soooooo thrilled! I'm now a (VERY VERY VERY) proud owner of a mini-jet, complete with all sorts of filter pads and extra gadgets! WOOHOO!!!! I was going to filter anything and everything this weekend, but Bobby said I might break it (i.e. Filtering my cat, Tobi, he said, wouldn't work.... Tobi was profusely thankful)...

                    So, I've now got a dilemma: I have a great new toy that I'm going to have to wait about 2 months (if I push it, 1 month) before I can use it.

                    I think I'm going to make a wine now...

                    Ah, now I must raid my kitchen cupboards to see what I can throw together...

                      Update:
                      Started a gallon of sacred sage wine (a good "unusual" wine from years past) and a rose-petal/sultana wine.

                      I've got high hopes for both!
