  • How long to keep wine in plastic bottles?

    Hi,
I have had a search on this topic but haven't been able to find the answer.

I have copella apple juice every morning and so have a lot of these 1 litre plastic PET bottles. I was planning on using them for the wines I was going to drink soon and glass for long term storage. No problem so far...

How long is short term, 1-month, 2, 3...? I have 6 gallons to bottle up and I am trying to decide how much to bottle "properly" and how much to put in plastic. The plastic bottles are so much easier.

    Thanks

the only reason why water bottles have a date on them, is because legally, it comes under the food regulations and therefore requires a use by date on it (same as the office cooler bottles I collect/deliver in bulk).

I'd be inclined not to keep it (wine that is) in plastic for more than 3 months. Its to do with the ability of the alcohol content to act as a solvent and possibly to extract plasticisers and other chemicals, also some "food grade" platics have a slight "air permeability" and could start the process of oxidation, affecting the flavour/taste.

          Thanks.
I put most of the wine in glass, and a couple of gallons in plastic in the fridge. Hopefully it will last to Christmas (I mean not being drunk rather than going off!). There certainly wont be any left after christmas.
I do find plastic bottles so much easier to fill in the first place, they are also much easier to store in the fridge, especially once opened.
I guess the true question here is after what lenght of time does short term become long term? You can buy wine in plastic bottles from the supermarket and if you go to france there is a lot of wine in plastic bottles (straight from small vinyards). But these are all to be drunk now.
I think I use the rule anything that will not be drunk in a couple of months goes into glass.
