  • Spontaneous Shiraz Eruption

After a scare last week with an eggy smell in my Beaverdale Shiraz kit (now gone away, thankfully), I racked on Sunday at 1.01something into a 5gal Better Bottle.

It has been sitting there, good as gold, in my office, with the airlock ticking away slowly, gently but steadily

Two hours ago I heard a gurgling sound and looked around to find shiraz escaping from the top of the airlock

Nothing has changed, nothing has moved, so I'm a bit puzzled why. I'm not worried by this, but I haven't posted for a few hours and I was getting itchy fingers

The Shiraz hates you for blaming it for the eggy smell.

A change in temperature will sometimes cause that, too. I have several carboys full of white wine fermenting in my cool garage. Normally the temperature doesn't flutuate much as long as the door remains closed. However, last night I arrived home from work and was horrified to find my wife had left the door open. It was 75F degrees and my well-behaved fermentations were all spewing beige foam from the airlocks. Bad wife!

(Hey, I used the word "spew" for the third time on the forum)

            Thanks for the sensible advice

It's going mad - the entire neck of the Better Bottle is full of foam.

I reckon the wine gods are trying to make up for the stuck fermentation on the Grenache by making sure this one ferments REALLY well.

It hates you... It's just fooling you into a false sense of security, then it will erupt again. This time it won't scrub out of the carpet....

Still awake. I had to sellotape my eyelids open, and I've run out of Red Bull.
