Grape Concentrate

Me local Woolworths are selling Grape plants for only a few pounds, question is, if i were able to get fruit from these plants could i make my own grape concentrate. I understand that the plants will not be up to the standard to make wine out of. Since my local HBS aint so local i have to find ways to improvise, does anybody think this is possible?

You should get your own grape juice ( not concentrate!) after 3 years growth and training. The wine produced from it should be perfectly drinkable. Perhaps a little high in acid, depending on where you are, but that can be dealt with. The Betty Sampson book has a good section on growing and making wines from grapes.

I am ordering more plants this year, so maybe you want to tag onto my order, do you have a greenhouse? if so...I will (hopefully) have some cabernet cuttings that will have rooted soon.

Hello shirlthegirl43, I'm guessing the vines may not be of the kind of quality for making a good grape wine, for sure though i could make wine from it.

Bob, unfortunately i don't have a greenhouse, i was hoping that by some small chance i could get them to grow outdoors, but i guess in this country the weather may let me down?

The more worrying factor is i'm absolutely useless as a gardener!!

I have grape vines growing outdoors in the garden. They are British hardy varieties I suppose - just look at the plant label and see if it says it has to be planted indoors.

I bought the vines on the spur of the moment from Woolies last year - they were reduced to 50p each or something. They didn't do a lot last year but have nice healthy buds on them now. They are growing in large planters at the moment as I don't have a space for them to be permanently planted into yet.

Nope ...you can grow good quality vines outdoors in the UK. I have 75 vines planted outdoors and will have a crop this year so we will see how good they are. I am growing reichensteiner grapes and rondo...Halfpenny vineyards in the midlands are growing ansd making wine fromn reichensteiner, its good.

and dont worry you dont need to be a good gardener, you need to learn the proper pruning and training regime is all ...the grapes know how to do the rest

I'm going to Halfpenny green sometime soon, see if i can pick up some vines.

Bob's idea, local grown vines, if they let me have some they might just grow in axl's garden.
